The Glories of Italy

The great historic curtain of the Teatro Cavour: a work of art, memory, and national identity.

The canvas welcomes spectators as they enter the theater and represents a true "show within a show," capable of recounting the excellence of Italian history, culture, music, literature, and science through art.

The historical curtain

The curtain of the Teatro Cavour depicts some of the figures who, throughout history, have contributed to making the Italian nation great.

The work, entitled The Glories of Italy , was commissioned to the Imperia painter Leonardo Massabò and features an allegorical composition of great visual impact.

The protagonists are gathered in a classical clearing, divided into groups dedicated to history, tragedy, music, comedy, literature and science.

Cavour and Dante at the center of the stage

At the center of the work are Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour, and Dante Alighieri, symbols of Italian political and linguistic unity. Above them appear Apollo, Italy Enthroned, and Winged Fame, while around them unfolds a grand celebration of the arts, letters, and sciences.
