The Pelagos Sanctuary: The Municipality of Imperia's Commitment to the Giants of the Sea
What is the Pelagos Sanctuary?
The Pelagos International Marine Mammal Sanctuary is a marine protected area of approximately 96,000 km² spanning the waters of Italy, France, and the Principality of Monaco. Established under an international agreement signed in Rome in 1999 and entered into force in 2002, it is the only international marine area in the Mediterranean dedicated to the protection of cetaceans and their habitat.
The crystalline blue waters of the Ligurian Sea , which surround Imperia, are part of this vast marine paradise, a fragile yet vital refuge.
The Goal
The primary objective of the Agreement is to protect the area's rich biodiversity. The Sanctuary's waters are, in fact, a natural stage for an extraordinary spectacle: here, you can spot cetaceans (such as fin whales and sperm whales) feeding and dancing, dolphins playing curiously near boats, and a variety of other marine species, including sea turtles.
The Role of the Municipality
The Municipality of Imperia joined the Pelagos Charter with DGC no. 51 of September 30, 2013. Joining the Pelagos Charter commits the Municipality of Imperia to adopt and promote solutions and practices within its territory that ensure the least possible impact on the species that inhabit the Sanctuary.
Through this commitment, and by promoting sustainable navigation and coastal management practices, Imperia serves as a beacon of hope for the conservation of marine ecosystems and actively contributes to the protection of the giants of our sea.
